What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is an injectable dermal filler made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, contributing to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and folds. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and it gives the skin fullness. Juvederm restores natural volume, which tends to decrease with age and sun damage. Juvederm is a dermal filler which is injected into the skin to plump up the skin, make it firmer and smooth out lines and wrinkles.

What is Juvederm used for?

Juvederm is used in the upper and lower lips, in what is called the nasal labial folds. Juvederm is also used in the marionette or puppet lines. Some people also have Juvederm injected in the eyelid area, specifically in the glabella area. Sometimes, Juvederm is injected around the crow's feet, and also in an area called the malar bags, or the area below the eyes.

Juvederm is used for the treatment of the following situations:

  • Facial lines
  • Wrinkle correction
  • Shaping facial contours (such as cheeks and chin correcting)
  • Smile lines (correcting thin, superficial lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead)
  • Most types of scars
  • Lip enhancement

What is the active ingredient of Juvederm?

The active ingredient of Juvederm is non-animal highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid, in it’s natural form, is a liquid which the body metabolizes very quickly. Cross-linking is a process that chemically binds the individual chains of hyaluronic acid together so that it is changed into a gel which lasts much longer once injected under the skin of the face.

How does Juvederm work?

Juvederm improves your appearance by lifting and adding volume to the wrinkles and folds in the treatment area. After six to nine months, the biocompatible compound is naturally absorbed into the body.

Hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1000 times its own weight in water, thereby adding new volume under the surface of sagging skin.

According to the manufacturer, Juvederm also continues working as time goes on by adding even more collagen to the face. Hyaluronic acid stretches cells in skin, known as fibroblasts, in a way that causes the skin to create new collagen. Hyaluronic acid also seems to stop the breakdown of existing collagen.

Do Juvederm injections hurt?

Juvederm is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The smooth consistency of JUVEDERM dermal filler also may help to minimize the discomfort that can sometimes occur during the injection procedure. To make the procedure more comfortable local anesthetic or a topical numbing cream can be used to numb the treatment area.

How are Juvederm treatments performed?

Before the Juvederm treatment, your doctor will determine the best injection sites for you. Usually, the area will then be numbed with a topical anesthetic before the Juvederm injections are done. The Juvederm gel is then injected just beneath the skin surface with a very fine needle to smooth away lines, restore natural contours and enhance lips for a smooth, natural and refreshed appearance. The filler remains in the skin where it binds water to produce a lift and firmness to the treated areas.

What will I look like immediately following my Juvederm treatments?

Immediately after the Juvederm treatment, you can expect to see slight redness and swelling and to feel tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally goes away within a day or two. After a Juvederm lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days (up to a week). If the discomfort continues you should contact your physician.

What kind of results can I expect with Juvederm injections?

With Juvederm you can expect to see almost instantaneous improvement in treatment areas. Lines and wrinkles fill up very quickly. By the time you leave the doctor's office, you will see that most of your lines and wrinkles have either disappeared or shrunk substantially. Most patients should return two weeks after the initial Juvederm treatment so that they can have re-injections of Juvederm to fix any lines or wrinkles that may still be around. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last up to 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental "touch up" treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

How is Juvederm different from Restylane?

No head-to-head clinical trials have been performed to compare Juvederm vs. Restylane. However, some doctors already report more favorable results with Juvederm. According to Dr. Gregory Buford, "Juvederm also gives the patients less lumpiness . . . which was a common problem with the previous filler, Restylane."

Medicis, the U.S. distributor of Restylane, has sent letters to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and other physicians claiming that Juvederm safety is not assured.

Specifically, Medicis calls into question the safety of using Juvederm on anyone who's had Restylane in the past. The interaction of these drugs has not been tested. Allergan, the maker of Juvederm, argues that the products contain nearly identical active ingredients so worries about interactions are unfounded.

The main difference between the two dermal fillers is in the level of smoothness with Juvederm being twice as smooth as Restylane, according to one Seattle-based Facial Plastic Surgeon. The relative firmness of Restylane can be an advantage in certain areas where a more robust filler can provide better correction.

Juvederm is a smooth consistency gel while Restylane is a particulate or granular gel.

Also, Juvederm is 35% more cross-linked hyaluronic acid /ml compared to Restylane.

Juvederm appears to work better in the lips than Restylane.

Juvederm is described as "next generation" because the gel is smoother than Restylane and works on all skin types and colors.

Advantages of Juvederm over Restylane:

  • Juvederm is softer, more malleable and easier to inject (i.e. better flow characteristics). There may possibly be less pain and bruising with Juvederm due to these better flow characteristics.
  • Juvederm may last longer than Restylane because the degree of cross-linking with Juvederm which is associated with persistence of effect.

Juvederm injectable gel is the only smooth consistency gel—other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers currently on the market are made of granular consistency gels.*

How long do the beneficial effects of Juvederm last?

The beneficial effects of Juvederm usually last six to nine months. How long the effects last varies from person to person depending on skin type, the area treated, and the volume injected. Juvederm is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, so the lines, wrinkles or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance without top up treatments. The outcome can be optimized and made to last longer with a follow-up procedure a few weeks after the initial treatment. In some cases, the effect may last for up to one year.

The average life of Juvederm in the lips is 6 months because of the high vascularisation of the lips.

How is Juvederm different from collagen-based facial fillers?

Juvederm is non-animal, stabilized hyaluronic acid. Juvederm is created through special biosynthesis techniques. Collagen is derived directly from humans, cows (bovine) or pigs (porcine). Since Juvederm is non-animal based there is no need to perform an allergy test before using Juvederm. With collagen-based fillers allergic reactions are possible in 3 to 4% of people treated. Juverderm lasts two to three times as long as collagen-based fillers last.

How is Juvederm different from other dermal fillers?

According to Allergan, the claims surrounding Juvederm are that there is increased cross-linking. This creates a firmer structure, a firmer substrate, and therefore Juvederm will last longer than the rest of the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. In reality, this probably means a one or two month increase in the length of time the effects last. Juvederm is also very smooth compared to many of the other dermal fillers.

How is Juvederm different from Botox?

Juvederm injectable gel is a "next generation" hyaluronic acid dermal filler that provides volume and is used to treat wrinkles and folds resulting from a loss of volume beneath the surface of the skin such as perioral lines and nasolabial folds (lines around your mouth and nose). Juvederm restores your skin's volume for a smooth, natural look and feel. BOTOX Cosmetic is not a filler. BOTOX Cosmetic relaxes muscle activity and is used to treat moderate to severe lines caused by the dominant frown muscles between the eyebrows (the glabellar area). This allows the two vertical lines between the brows, often referred to as the "11," to temporarily diminish for a smoother appearance.

Juvederm and Botox are different types of wrinkle treatments. Botox is a muscle "relaxer". Juvederm (like Restylane) is a dermal filler. As a general rule, Botox is used for wrinkles on the upper half of the face and Juvederm is used for wrinkles on the lower half of the face (especially around the mouth). The reason for this is that expression muscles cause the wrinkles on the upper half of the face (for example, a frown line when you frown or "crow’s feet" when you squint). Botox relaxes these muscles and the wrinkles fade.

Wrinkles form on the lower half of the face due to loss of volume. Cosmetic dermal fillers like Juvederm replace this lost volume and fill in the line or wrinkle. So to summarize: Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler that is for the treatment of wrinkles on the lower face. Botox is a relaxer that is used for totally different wrinkles on the upper half of the face.
